Island Carriers is proud to play a key role in keeping the Isles of Scilly moving year round. Van drivers are an integral part of the team that ensure essential goods, luggage, freight and supplies reach homes, businesses, and visitors across the islands every day.
Kizzy Nicholls joined the team in 2024 as a van driver and shares her experience and progression within the team.
“I joined in April 2024 as a van driver, later transitioning into an administrative support role assisting with daily operations. From there, I was promoted to supervisor, where I support team coordination and the operational day‑to‑day running of Island Carriers. What I value most about all the roles I’ve had at Island Carriers is the variety each day brings.”
Van drivers interact with many different groups of people across the islands, building strong working relationships and becoming a key part of the community.
“I communicate with so many different people – tourists, mainland hauliers, other departments and locals. It makes working for Island Carriers particularly rewarding and engaging.”
A supportive team environment
“The team are fantastic. The support I get from them is always positive, and the support they give each other is exceptional. When things get busy, everyone steps up without hesitation. We’re always smiling and laughing, even if it’s 7am on the quay in January and it’s raining. That positivity shows in the quality of work the team delivers every day.”
Advice for new applicants
“Everyone at Island Carriers and the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group is so supportive and willing to help you get as much as you can out of your job. No question is too small or silly to ask.”
“My advice to someone thinking about applying for a role at Island Carriers would be to go for it. It’s a diverse role where every day is different. You’ll meet and work with lots of different people and do so many different things, all in a beautiful location!
