Meet Jeanette Ware – Islands Operations Manager, St Mary’s
Based on St Mary’s in the Isles of Scilly, Jeanette Ware plays a key role in keeping island life running smoothly. From supporting multiple departments to being a familiar and trusted point of contact for the local community, no two days are ever the same.
How long have you been working for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group?
I have worked for the Group for 11 years. I started as Island Carriers Manager and changed to Island Operations Manager two years ago. It’s been a real journey, and I’ve seen the group evolve a great deal during that time.
What were you doing before this role?
I worked for many years on the mainland as an advocate for young adults with learning disabilities, and it was very much my passion. However, I swapped one passion for another, as working for this community is now my passion. Although the work is very different, supporting people has always been at the heart of what I do.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Wow, every single day is different! I don’t know what I will be doing until my phone pings first thing in the morning. Generally, I support all departments. I play a big role with Island Carriers and work closely with Emma, Island Carriers Manager, who manages the day-to-day running of the operation and the team. I am also the first point of contact for islanders, who come to me with all sorts of queries and requests for help. My day could start with a call from someone needing to get on Scillonian III or Skybus, or a call from St Mary’s Quay to say the freezers have broken down! It is the most diverse job I have ever had.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy all aspects of my role, but my close bond with my work colleagues is very important to me. I also have a strong commitment to the community and value how much they rely on me to help. Being trusted in that way means a lot.
What is the most challenging aspect of your role?
Juggling both the team and the community can be challenging. I love both very much. The teams across the board are amazing, and the effort that goes into keeping everything running smoothly shouldn’t be underestimated.
Could you share a few memorable or rewarding moments?
I have seen Island Carriers go from strength to strength and being part of that has been very rewarding. Managing the workforce through Covid times was difficult, but we did it and we did it well. Watching the company grow into the business we have now, with new vessels and Skybus thriving, makes me incredibly proud. I’m proud of all the departments and all the teams. My job is the best job in the world and I love it.
